IN MEMORY OF THE BOMBING OF HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI ON AUGUST 6 AND 9, 1945, DISCOUNT OFFERED ON BOOK SET DURING THE COLD WAR
JACKSON, MI – This week is the 69 year anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945. In memory of this event, local author, Patricia Robertson, will be offering copies of the kindle version of her book, Buying Time: Beating Swords into Plowshares, for 99 cents.
In the 1980’s, with the doomsday clock at three minutes to midnight, small groups of protestors risked their lives and freedom in civil disobedience at nuclear weapon’s sites. Robertson’s book chronicles the story of one such group which includes a rabble rousing Catholic priest and Methodist minister, a kindergarten teacher, and a Quaker homemaker, as they symbolically beat swords into plowshares, or in this case, hammer on a B-52 bomber. Arrested and spending time in jail, they bought the world time through doing time.
“Buying Time is a fictionalized account of a small group of anti-nuclear peace activists in the ‘80s. Driven by a passionate regard for peace, they put their lives, reputations and families on the line. As the doomsday clock advances, each ‘peace warrior’ makes costly personal sacrifices in a bid to postpone apocalypse. Patricia Robertson’s book takes the reader down the little-trod path of heroic sacrifice in the name of faith and action,” states Ken Wyatt, retired editorial writer, Jackson Citizen Patriot (Michigan).
Patricia Robertson was active in the peace movement during the 1980’s, participating in civil disobedience at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base in the upper peninsula of Michigan and at Williams International, the maker of parts for cruise missiles.
“With the historic anniversary of the dropping of the first nuclear bomb happening this week, it seemed like an appropriate time to offer this book at a discount,” states Robertson. Print versions of the book are also available with one dollar from each sale going to support Meta Peace Team (formerly Michigan Peace Team) and their efforts to promote non-violent resolutions to violent conflicts.
Buying Time is available in Kindle e-book format and print through Amazon. More information on this book and other books by Patricia Robertson is available through her website, http://patriciamrobertson.com.
“I invite you to go back in time to the Cold War era of Ronald Reagan, ‘Star Wars’ Strategic Defense Initiative and MAD – Mutual Assured Destruction,” Robertson further states. “We have come a long way in our efforts to live peacefully together, but there is still a long way to go.”
